Love - Art - Disease - Pain - Life-Humanness - "Otherness" In our desensitised society, the artists, the bohemians, poor, discarded, "others", recovering addicts - all are more in touch with their human-ness than the so called mainstream. Despite everything - HUMANNESS, LOVE, LIFE, ART survives. -Jonathan Larson

Random Media Thoughts:

First, did anyone see the Anna Nicole Show premiere last weekend? Anna Nicole live? Not a great idea...especially because she's scripted. And it's kind of hard to read the cue cards when you can't quite read all that well. I love Anna, don't get me wrong. But, I like the "just regular" old Anna. Not the making-fun-of-herself (without knowing it) Anna. And Howard? He's even worse. He's a lawyer, for christ sake. Not an actor. Man. I've been looking forward to season II of Anna since season I ended. I hope they didn't go and frack it all up. We'll see how things develop this weekend...

What about the Grammy's? I want a picture of Harvey Fierstein in that dress he wore! Did he not look fabulous? I've got to see HAIRSPRAY when I'm back in NYC this month. I dug all the suits and ties the guys were wearing to the event...and Queen Latifah looked AWESOME. We won't even TOUCH Aretha Franklin...yikes. In the immortal words of Shirley Q., "She needs to get herself some "Garanimals"...

After 7 years, Buffy The Vampire Slayer is coming to an end. There are only 5 episodes left before the show is OVER. That last episode is really gonna be a tear jerker for me. Angel, Riley, Kendra, Joyce, Faith, Tara, Oz, Jenny, well...uh...everyone is rumored to come back...even the dead ones. There is speculation as to what's going to happen to Buffy. She may die and another slayer might be put in her stead...Dawn, perhaps. Whatever it is...there are more rumors that Joss Whedon may continue the series, or a spin-off, rather. "Chosen" will air on May 20 at 8pm on UPN.

The best episode BY FAR this season has been "Conversations With Dead People". Willow's conversation with the departed Tara really got to me. Alyson Hannigan is a wicked actor and I didn't really realize her impact until this episode. Buffy's conversation with Holden was really intersting. You don't get to see Buffy bare emotion that much...

HOLDEN
I was just wondering, (stands) is it possible, even a little bit, that the reason you have trouble connecting to guys is because you think maybe they're not worth it? Maybe you think you're better than them.

BUFFY
(glares) Say, there's that bloodlust I was looking for.

HOLDEN
Struck a nerve.

BUFFY
I'm gonna strike a nerve cluster in a minute, you don't get off this. I don't remember you being this annoying.

HOLDEN
You don't remember me at all.

BUFFY
Yes, I do.

HOLDEN
Yeah, like, after 30 minutes of reminding. And I don't take it personally because clearly you were in your own little world in high school. All chosen. All destiny. Who could live with that for seven years and not feel superior?

BUFFY
I'm not. My God, if anything, I— (hangs head)

HOLDEN
What?

BUFFY
I just—(sighs) if you knew what I've done, what I've let myself become. My best friends don't even—You'd laugh, you heard some of the things I've done to them.

HOLDEN
(sits on nearby headstone) Buffy, I'm here to kill you, not to judge you.

BUFFY
The last guy I was with, it got really— I behaved like a monster, treated him like— But at the same time, I-I let him completely take me over. Do things to me that— (starts to cry, Holden stands) I'm sorry. (wipes eyes) Wow, I didn't mean to get all true-confessions there. I don't know what's wrong with me.

Holden walks forward to inspect a figurine of Mary that adorns a nearby tombstone. He picks up Mary.

HOLDEN
There's nothing wrong with you.

Holden hits Buffy in the head with the Mary statue, sending Buffy across the sarcophagus in a flip. Holden jumps over the tomb and lands in front of Buffy, grabbing her jacket, and talking right in her face in his vampire visage.

HOLDEN
Everyone's got issues. (growls and goes to her neck, fangs bared)

BUFFY
(pauses) You son of a bitch!

HOLDEN
(stands) What?

BUFFY
I think I'm gonna kill you just a little bit more than usual. (she punches, he blocks then kicks her)

HOLDEN
Aw, come one. I mean, we had a moment. You opened up. It was really sweet. It make me want to bite you. I'm sorry if I overstepped my bounds. I'm just new to this mortal enemy stuff. (she stands, he kicks her) Pretty fast learner, though, right?

Buffy kicks him and jumps him, pushing him (and herself) through a stained glass window into a nearby crypt.

I just purchased one of several(identical) silver crosses that Sarah Michelle Gellar wore in the first and second seasons of Buffy. The cross was given to Buffy from Angel in the first episode, "Welcome To The HellMouth". It's such a prominent piece of wardrobe that I've already had second and third parties involved in trying to obtain the piece. Buffy wore the necklace in the final episode of season 2, when she was forced to send Angel to Hell (via the Acathla statue). And to think that I wanted a "Heart of The Ocean" necklace! HA! It's great to have connections in the entertainment industry...Planet Johnnywood will be opening soon...

I'm in the midst of so many projects right now. Grymm, next year's bear, and other book drivel. The SC BOOK FESTIVAL was more like a 7th grade science fair, except with Pat Conroy and the Dixie Chicks. I've been working out religiously for the past month. For those that want to keep up to date on my weight loss meter...I weighed in last Monday and I had lost 15 pounds. How the other half lives...sheesh.

Ciao for now,
John
