Love - Art - Disease - Pain - Life-Humanness - "Otherness" In our desensitised society, the artists, the bohemians, poor, discarded, "others", recovering addicts - all are more in touch with their human-ness than the so called mainstream. Despite everything - HUMANNESS, LOVE, LIFE, ART survives. -Jonathan Larson

THE EXPLETIVE MADONNA

Why they still produce edited versions of CD's is beyond me. It's like painting a bra on a Botticelli. I made the ignorant mistake of picking up the edited version of Madonna's AMERICAN LIFE today, but was glad I noticed it before I opened it. I have to make another trip back to the store after work, brave the traffic and return it.

Madonna has spoken about her 10th album 'American Life' saying she feels she has just woken from a dream.

"All of these songs reflect my current state of mind. I feel like I have just woken up out of a dream" she states. "They range from dismay and anger to joy and certainty. Hopefully, I have taken the personal and made it universal".

'American Life' was co-written and co-produced with Mirwais Ahmadzai who she also worked with on 'Music'.

The controversial video for title track has been out for over a month now and according her to people "expresses a panoramic view of our culture and looming war through the view of a female superhero portrayed by Madonna set against a backdrop of current cultural obsessions. It's a penetrating examination of our national psyche".

Over the next several months we will also be hearing various remixes of the track by Missy Elliott, Peter Rauhofer, Felix da Housecat and Paul Oakenfold.

Madonna will also be seen in unusual places promoting this record. The most high profile appearance on the publicity trail will be in a cameo appearance on the hit TV series Will and Grace.

The album 'American Life' will be released April 21 worldwide. (April 22 USA).

Easter was fun. I had a few people over for dinner...chicken, carrot souffle, broccoli...YUM! Entertainment was provided by a couple of wigs, some impromptu "microphones" and some Krapaoke. Man, we were fabalous. We wrapped up the night by watching Hedwig & The Angry Inch. It's the first time I've watched it on the big-ass television, and it was rockin'. The surround sound was killer, too...and I heard and saw things that I had missed the first 327 times I saw it. The film has new meaning now. I understand and can empathize with Hedwig, where as before it was just a beautiful piece of cinematic art. Transformations can be beautiful...I'm tellin' ya that!

MIDNIGHT RADIO

Rain falls hard
Burns dry
A dream
Or a song
That hits you so hard
Filling you up
And suddenly gone

Breath Feel Love
Give Free
Know in you soul
Like your blood knows the way
From you heart to your brain
Know that you're whole

And you're shining
Like the brightest star
A transmission
On the midnight radio
And you're spinning
Like a 45
Ballerina
Dancing to your rock and roll

Here's to Patti
And Tina
And Yoko
Aretha
And Nona
And Nico
And me

And all the strange rock and rollers
You know you're doing all right
So hold on to each other
You gotta hold on tonight

And you're shining
Like the brightest stars
A transmission
On the midnight radio

And you're spinning
Your new 45's
All the misfits and the losers
Yeah, you know you're rock and rollers
Spinning to your rock and roll

Lift up your hands

Hershey's has come out with a line of sugar-free chocolates. I should have heeded the warning that my ass gave me last week after eating the sugar-free caramel from the frogurt parlor, but no, I had to torture myself once again. The sugar-free Reeces Peanut Butter Cups will make you fart for 12 hours per serving. So, for the salvation of your family and friends nose hairs, watch your intake of sugar-free sweets.

TREASURE PLANET, Disney's 41st full length animated feature is due out on DVD on April 29th. I have my own speculations as to why the movie totally tanked. First of all, the marketing campaign was horrible. Look at how they promoted Lilo and Stitch...which (in my opinion) is one of the most clever movies that Disney has ever done. Treasure Planet had a very weak trailer run...and almost no television advertising other than the McDonald's spots. It was a casualty not only of increased competition from other studios but also of a persistent reluctance among teenage moviegoers to embrace the action-oriented animated gig. Remember Atlantis? Yikes! It did better, though...because the marketing was more carefully planned out...and it wasn't released within a three week time frame of a Harry Potter movie! That means obvious destruction right there!
Disney used to have a lock on the animated feautre market, but in the past several years they've been given some pretty stiff competition from Fox and DreamWorks. I like what Jill Krutick said in an interview that I read recently,"Animation is clearly the heart and soul of Disney and it drives the whole content machine and ancillary sales. And clearly, `Treasure Planet' was a disappointment. But it doesn't mean the machine is broken by any means.'' I love optimism when it comes to power-house company's that I love so dearly!
The House of Mouse had to lower it's 2002 estimated earnings because of the movie's weak performance, which also has something to do with art cut backs company wide. Maybe they're doing the right thing in cutting back on the market right now...and sticking to other forms of feature film. "PIRATES OF THE CARRIBEAN" will surely do well for the fact that Johnny Depp is starring in it...and this Fall's "THE HAUNTED MANSION", headlining Eddie Murphy. Hopefully 2003 will be a better year for the company...but I am definitly picking up my copy of Treasure Planet when it's available to us.
